5 Facts You Need to Know Before You Buy
Abeka Curriculum was founded about 30 years ago. Many Christian schools and home schools use their curriculum. They provide textbooks and teaching aids with a Christian base. They were first used at the Pensacola Christian Academy in Pensacola, Florida and are probably still used there today.
Here are some facts you might want to know about this curriculum that will help you understand what is has to offer and what to watch out for if you aren’t sure whether you should buy it or not.
1. Children who like workbooks tend to like Abeka.
2. Parents who like to have everything written out for them about exactly what they are supposed say and do tend to like Abeka.
3. Parents who like to do lesson plans and do school-at-home usually like Abeka.
4. People who use Abeka tend to have a higher burn out rate (in my experience) than people who use real books or some other type of curriculum guide.
5. Abeka tends to be about 1 grade level above the public school system. If your child is advanced, they should have no problem keeping up with Abeka.
With this being said, just because something is popular, doesn’t mean it is the right curriculum for your family. Realize that if you decide to use Abeka curriculum, you might have to make some adjustments if your children don’t learn well from textbooks or workbooks. Some children can do the workbooks and then don’t remember a thing that they read or did. If you find that your children continually fail the tests in their workbooks, then you might need to find other methods to learn the material, possibly using a more hands on approach. If your children don’t pass the History tests, then you might want to adapt to a story approach to learning History instead of textbooks.
As with any curriculum, parents need to look at all the aspects of a curriculum, along with the learning styles of their children, so they can make an informed choice about what books they will use for homeschooling.
