Abeka Academy - What is it and is it Right for My Children?

With Abeka Academy or any curriculum or program that you use for homeschooling, parents need to make an informed choice. The more information they have, the better decision they can make.

As a parents you need to take into account your child’s learning style, your teaching style, your budget and family structure when choosing any books, curriculum or school options.

Here are some facts about Abeka Academy that parents need to know:

1. Students either use a video program or a parent-directed program (no videos)

2. You can choose to have the DVDs sent to you or streamed to you through your Internet connection. There is a savings of $100 if you choose the Internet option.

3. Parents grade quizzes, tests, papers and projects.

4. Courses cannot be retaken.

5. All tests and exams have to be taken and cannot be retaken.

6. All work must be done in cursive except for grades 9-12.

7. Videos are recorded classes with a teacher and students. Your child is basically watching what is going on in a classroom.

8. There are approximately 3 hours of videos to watch each day for grades K-6, but they are broken down in to 15-20 minute intervals.

You can call in or email any questions you can’t answer for the student.

10. You receive all books with the program and can get a refund within 30 days for any unused material if you don’t like it.

You probably already know the cost of the program which is comparable to enrolling your child in a private school. Abeka materials tend to be about 1 year ahead of most public schools. Enrolling in Abeka Academy is not only a financial commitment, but also a time commitment. Since you have a lot of money invested, you will need to make sure your child keeps up with his/her work.
